February is Black History month
February is designated a Black History month but I've never subscribed to that... black history is history every single day , 365 days a year 24-7... but I've been sidelined by a back problem and have neglected my social media accounts so this week is a catchup week!
Although racism and fate kept him from the major leagues, Josh Gibson was one of the most dominant sluggers in baseball history.
The former Negro Leagues star is credited with hitting almost 800 home runs over his 17-year career and was such a fearsome hitter that many fans called him the “black Babe Ruth.” Some who saw both play even called Ruth the “white Josh Gibson.”
He was considered the best power hitter of his era in the Negro Leagues and perhaps even the majors.
Gibson’s natural skills were immense. His powerful arm, quick release and agility made base runners wary of trying to steal.
But hitting is what made Gibson the second-highest paid player in black baseball behind Satchel Paige, another future Hall of Famer.
The Sporting News, baseball’s written authority for decades, credited Gibson in 1967 with hitting a 580-foot home run in Yankee Stadium. The ball landed two feet from the top of the bleacher wall.
He died in January, 1947 and was elected into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1972.
